Growth vs Fixed Mindset



One of the biggest determinant of success in which ever area of life you can think of is how we think about a certain situation. Whether it is with our fitness, our careers, our relationships, our personal skills, our mindset is key.

There are various mindsets out there, but two have emerged as the dominant ones in how we see new situations: the growth mindset and the fixed mindset.

The fixed mindset assumes that the way we are is something we are born with. That we cannot change it. This mindsets makes us continuously trying to prove ourself because we never think we are good enough. Why would we be good enough since we were born this way and can't change. We tend to avoid challenges, give up easy, take feed back very poorly and personally and feel threatened by the success of others.

The growth mindset on the other hand, assumes that we can change by deliberate practice. With this mindset, we seek to thrive and explore new capabilities, we embrace challenges, see effort as the path to mastery and learn from criticism. The success of others inspires us.

In our modern environment that is always evolving with each passing year, you can see how our mindset can either limit us or allow us to achieve what we want. Does having a growth mindset mean you believe you can one day fly or become the next Mozart? Not really, it means that you find pleasure in the pursuit of such ambitious goals.

Depending on how we are raised, we will lean towards one mindset or the other. As you can realize by now, having a growth mindset will help you move forward faster in life, achieving goals you though so far were unachievable.

Here are a few ways you can develop it:

🔴 Learn what your weaknesses are. Realizing what they are will help you focus on what is important and what to work on.

🔴Focus on learning instead of seeking approval. When someone says something you don't know, ask them to explain it to you instead of pretending that you already know about. The only thing I do when I speak with strangers is to explain to me what they do or what they love or where they come from!

🔴I say this a lot, focus on the process, not the end result. The end result is a fixed thing. It's good for fixed mindset, which is what we want to evolve away from. Learning how to learn is a lost art nowadays. Focus on being better at what will get your closer to your goals rather than your actual goals.

🔴Get out of your comfort zone. Do something new. This could be something like saying hi to a stranger or taking an art class or even sticking up a conversation with someone you aren't comfortable with.

🔴Reflect on your learning often. This can be with the help of a semi weekly journal, meditation or any other form that speaks to you better. This will help you retain what you've learned better. What we learn isn't alway written or given to us, most of the time it's what we observe indirectly. Reflecting about these moments is very beneficial.

Getting good at the growth mindset will take practice and applying these 5 strategies often will help you make this your new mindset!
